It may be that your ancestor served with the 7th WIS. Private Charles H. Marsh,Company E,7th WIS,was killed May 5,1864 at Wilderness.
On May 5,the 7th WIS(Iron Brigade) fought against Ewell's Corps, the brigades of Jones(Virginians),Battle(Alabamians),Doles(Georgians),and Gordon(Georgians). The fighting took place south of the Orange Turnpike(now Highway 20),west of Saunders Field, north of the Higgerson farm.Initially successful, the 7th WIS and Iron Brigade captured the flag of the 48th Virginia but were flanked by Gordon's brigade and driven back.Wilderness was the costliest battle of the War for the 7th WIS,about 220 casualties.
Hope this was some help.
