Beta-hydroxybutyrate

My nephew died suddenly last year. The toxology reports on his urine and blood has come back within acceptable limits. He had, however, a fatty liver. They have now ordered a betahydroxy butyrate test now.

Why is this test being carried out - could it be this could have caused his death together with a fatty liver.

My nephew was only aged 33 and was a strapping lad at 6 feet tall. He did like a drink though, and did drink throughout the day though. However the alcolhol level at the time of his death was within acceptable levels.

Any help anyone can give me would be much appreciated.
