Wildeshausen

My great, great grandfather and mother moved to the united states in 1866 on the Bremen Pact.
Looking on the internet now and then over the last decade for genealogy information I recently found our family name [Wilshusen} noted as the "lower Saxon" spelling of Wildeshausen.
Have read some on the history of the city but have a few questions.
What does the name mean, and why was it attached to the town/city?
I also find a small number of people in Germany withthe same name.
Is this truly a family name or just a reference to a location in Germany?
Is there someplace that I can contact that could give me information of my ancestors prior to leaving Germany for the states?
How is the name pronounced in Germany?
My family pronounces it with W not V and the "h" has gone silent. Like two names Will/Susan.

I am from a town 20km away, Delmenhorst, so at least I can help you with the pronounciation in German: "Vil-des-hou-sen"
This is of course the pronounciation in High German, not the lower Saxon, or Platt, of your last name. You could try to contact the church for a register of marriages. But possibly you have done that already.
