My gggrandfather's marriage record in Toronto, Canada 1842 said he was of the 93rd regiment. He was born in Scotland c.1822 and his name was John Campbell. Is there a list of the soldiers who belonged to the 93rd regiment and where they were from?
Thanks

Hi,
My g grandfather was in the 93rd regiment as well and was in Toronto for a while . He also served in the West Indies and was in Halifax and Montreal in Canada as well during the 1830's. I found out some information about him through the Family History Center in Toronto (the Mormons). They were able to order in a record of about 300 hundred soldiers that were in the regiment between the 1830s and 1850s. It gave a number of details about the soldiers such as their appearance, and where they served and their rank as well as their military number. ( I have been told one can use this to get some further information from the National Archives in England.) Hope this will be of some help. Jim

I have investigated the John Campbells who were serving with the 93rd Regiment around that time. There were about 7 of them, John Campbell being a fairly common name. This is where the regiment was over the period in question.

1837 Weedon/Dublin, 38 Newry, 39 Cork emb Jan, 40 Toronto, 41 Toronto, 42 Niagara, 43 Toronto

In WO 12/9417 covering 1837-38 the following John Campbell candidates are indicated

born Kilmuir, Inverness Labourer
born Renfrew, Renfrewshire Labourer
born Eastwood, Renfrewshire Carder
born Latheron, Caithness Cooker?
born Barony, Lanark Dyer
born Old Macken, Aberdeen Labourer
born Kilmerach?, ?? Labourer
Added to these men was another born at Dornock, Sutherland who went with the Depot Bn and he remained in Scotland when the unit embarked for Ireland. The last mentioned man from Kilmerach seems to disappear from this point. I am wondering whether he is the man from Dornock

The cluster of men appear to remain the same until about 1841-42 by which time the 1st Bn has embarked for Canada. In WO 12/9421 (Toronto) covering 1841-42 in Canada are listed the men born at

Latheron
Kilmuir
Old Macken
Barony (1) Smith
Renfrew
Eastwood
Barony (2) Dyer in confinement and not listed in July to September 1841

They remain almost the same in WO 12/9422 (Niagara) covering 1842-43 by which time the man from Latheron is simply not mustered and the man from Eastwood has transferred to the Royal Candian Rifles as at September 1841.

In WO 12/9423 covering 1843-44 (Toronto) the man from Kilmuir is no longer mustered. The man from Barony had deserted but was brought back and sentenced to 6 months hard labour whilst the Renfrew man transferred to the Royal Candian Rifles in March 1842. Only the men from Latheron, Caithness (a cooper), Old Macken, Aberdeen (labourer) and Barony, Lanarks (smith) are mustered up to June 43.

These sweeps are enormously difficult because very often men are dropped out and slotted in without the arm clerks making correct annotations. In many cases the trades and birthplaces mysteriously change from book to book and deaths are sometimes not indicated either. I can see this here with the remaining man from Barony who was given as a Smith but who did not appear as such in the previous year. I think a lot of the problems in that era were down to men being dispersed all over the place in a territory and information coming back on an irregular basis. I could visualise that an absent soldier might have deserted or just disappeared and it would take a while before the true situation would be known.

A researcher put this together for me. I am interested in which man you think is your gggrandfather.

Hi. My name is Gary in Australia & I am tracing forebears including William Gunn, William Gunn & William Gunn. The latter 2 were with the Bourbon Regiment & then the 93rd. The 1st William m. Ann Campbell 1771 Barbados, the 2nd m. Margaret Wilson, 1799 Ayr, Ayr & the 1st & 2nd William along with Margaret are buried Christ Church, Barbados. Ann Campbell was the 2nd daughter to Ronald Campbell who was also a military man. Any info would be fantastic.

Regards,

Gary.

Hi John Mc,
I haven't been on this site for ages and noticed your reply.
2 yrs ago I hired a researcher in England to search for my John Campbell in the archives there. He searched about 6 John Campbells and we narrowed it down to likely being WO 12/9425 mostly because he enlisted in 1838 and it matched his approx. birth date more than the others. He tracked all those Campbells down. Some had died, some went back to Scotland.
So my John enlisted in Glasgow in 1838 and was from Barony, Lanarks, the smith, not the dyer.
I think this is the proper one, but can never be positive.
Thanks.

Hi Gina,

Thanks for the reply.

I am interested in the John Campbell from Kilmuir, Inverness.
My GGGrandfather, William McIntosh, married Alexandrina McLeod, when he was a Police Inspector in Portree, Isle of Skye about 1841. There was an Alexandrina McLeod married to a John Campbell of the 93rd Regiment. I assumed that he went to Canada with the Regiment in 1838 and died there. Did you find out about the Kilmuir man?

Hi John,
I was also looking at the John Campbell from Inverness as my family thought our Campbells were from there.
My researcher in England tracked him and he died apparently.
Here is what my researcher found:

In WO 12/9419 I soon noted a John Campbell born Kilmuir, Inverness along with some of the men I have already indicated. I followed through WO 12/4920 and into WOI 12/4921 and noted that this man leaves the 93rd Foot on 30 September 1841 when he transfers to the Royal Canadian Rifles. The books show that he originally enlisted on 23 December 1822 and was earlier a Labourer.
John Campbell born Kilmur Inverness died in June 1842 so he cannot be your
ancestor.(June 25)

Does that sound right for you?

Hi Gary,
None of your Campbells look familiar. Sorry. Mine all stayed in the Toronto area, Canada.

Hi Gina

Thank you for that information. My GGGrandfather was in the 93rd Regiment. He enlisted in 1813 and was pensioned in 1834 or 5. He would have known John Campbell (b Kilmuir) I am sure as they would have served together. I assume the Alexandrina McLeod he married was John Campbell's widow although my GGrandfather was born in 1842 so there is an obvious irrigularity. Perhaps they thought that John Campbell had deserted Alexandrina when he enlisted in a Canadian regiment. I have not been able to find my GGrandfather's birth record or a marriage record for GGGr but through DNA testing I have confirmed that our male line is closely related to my GGGrandfathers relations. I had wondered if he had been adopted.
That clears up one loose end for me.
