The talk about breeding sites goes back to the beginning of the 20th century (and probably earlier than that); however, mosquitoes do not breed (copulate) in water. To refer to catch basins as breeding sites literally means that the catch basins are breeding more catch basins. To talk about tree hole breeding sites takes us to the forest of Tolkien's ents.
To be more precise (and that's the aim of science isn't it?)one should talk about larval habitat: thus "container habitat," "tree hole habitat," "salt marsh habitat," or if one prefers to be more generic "oviposition site" because that is what is actually going at the various sites.
If anyone has seen a mosquito copulate in water, it should be written up in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
