I am a cashier in a large store and have seen first hand the misuse of these benefits. Most families are buying rounded meal items but all buy too many non food items which I believe are non nutritious. This includes boxes of snack
cakes, chip, soda and my biggest complaint is the buying of 30 dollar decorated cakes with food stamps. I see people buy crablegs and the best steaks on the shelf. It is no surprise that these persons run out of food and have to then go to a food pantry. Also there are those who make a career of living on the stamps. They have cards that are broken in half and some so worn you can't read the numbers. Some have more than one member of the same family all useing food stamps. I ahve seen these persons for the past 8 years still using this program when they could easily find some kind of supplemental income. These are very young people in their 20 and 30's using this program. This kind of misuse needs more monitoring. I myself would love to be on a commitee to reform what is eligible and not eligilble.
