Millions of years ago it took many months/years/centuries/millennia of sunshine to create one tonne of coal/oil. During this time the energy from the prehistoric sunshine was locked into plants which later became coal/oil. This energy was not used to heat the atmosphere or radiate back into space.

Today we burn this coal/oil in a few hours and the energy equivalent to the prehistoric sunshine heats our atmosphere. So the atmospheric temperature today is the sum of the prehistoric sunshine and the sunshine today.

The impact of "greenhouse gases" is twofold: firstly they are a measure of how much prehistoric sunshine we are releasing; and secondly they form a barrier which reduces the rate of radiation back into space.

Even without the "greenhouse" effects, the only way that we could radiate the extra heat resulting from releasing many months/years/centuries/millennia of prehistoric sunshine is to raise the temperature of the atmosphere (simple black body radiation physics).
