In Killing Mr. Griffin, there are characters who use their leadership abilities to get others to do what they want. Mark uses his handsome looks and popularity to get Susan and the others to go along with the plan to abduct Mr. Griffin. List and discuss the qualities one needs to be an effective leader. Think of current events, and discuss ways in which people in our society/school/community use leadership abilities to get others to do what they want.

To be a good leader you need to be:

Honest-Honesty is a big part in being a good leader. I wouldn't want a liar as my leader because that would mean they were hiding something.

Kind-A good leader needs to be kind and sensitive to other people's needs, and beliefs. If they are inconsiderate, no one would want a leader like this.

Smart-If you are smart then you would know what to do in rash decisions. Smart leaders are usually also informed. If you were in a group with someone, and your group leader forgot to read his part of the book. Therefore, they would not be informed and wouldn't be able to lead the discussion the next day.

During the presidential election, the candidates running for president stood for different beliefs and supported these beliefs. They would find a problem in the current news and plan on ways to fix it if they won. For example, President Obama supported abortion, and had plans on fixing the economy. When people went to vote for him, he was guranteed to get votes from people who also supported these topics. This shows that people are persuaded to vote for someone who agrees with them. This is often what people do everyday in order to pick a leader.

All good qualities Kenzie! Yes, leadership abilities are especially important for our political leaders. They too, can use such abilities to manipulate people, like you will see that Mike does in the book.
