Several hundred American P.O.W.'s died in WWII's
incident where the SS-393 was reported doing this event.
An agreement was reached before this saga, that neither side
would target any vessel painted with the internationally
recognized "RED CROSS"; Immediately, Sub Pac, radioed
the USS Queenfish (SS-393) to return to base and their C.O.
was then relieved.
As a enlisted disabled sub vet, I've seen an X.O. that was having a nervous breakdown. Needless to say, he was given a desk job and later retired.
