Hey guys. This site is a great idea!I fell in love with my '06 Firebird VII after I installed S.D. custom Antiquities.I'm now a fanatic for mini hums.I miss having a useable trem,so I'm having John Jagneaux build me a custom bird with probably a Floyd Rose trem. Before you crap on my choice,I'll tell you that I'm not a metal playe.I just like how the floyd stays in tune.I play my original tunes which range from classic sounding
rock to psyche fusion and progish rock.Completion of this build is about 2 months from now.
We're probably gonna go with a Jacksonish headstock design.
This will definitely not be a traditional design, but I do hope to have most of the superb tone of my VII.I am a little concerned about the tone change with the floyd rose, but when I think about the tail piece design of the VII,that's a pretty flimsy attachment point for the strings.I think the floyd might just beef up the tone in a nice way compared to the VII.
If this works out the way I think it will,I might keep the Vii and put a stop tail behind Tuneamatic.
Anybody use the middle pickup much on their VII's? I kinda like that tone.
If anybody would like a superb example of recent Gibson factory workmanship,I might sell my bird.
Here's a pic of my bird next to my K-Line strat and Jagneaux Lester.

Man, 2 months? Thats REALLY reasonable lead time. Takes me longer to build them for me (but I still have to work my day job thats why :cries: lol).

I had a guy ask me about doing one with a Floyd, should be pretty do able. Looking forward to seeing yours done!

I have my White FBV with 3 mini's & due to the fact it's wired with push/push switching/volume for each pickup, I can get all combos & frequently include the middle pu. To have 3 pickups & only 3 tonal choices would just be silly IMO.
I have NO issues withmy lyre tailpiece, but if you must use another, I'd suggest a PRS trem. You can divebomb to your heart's content & return to pitch...& it's not a tone sucker like a floyd.
To each his own...

Hey thanks for the input.Yea I actually like the middle pu tone and to have a 5 way switch would be cool.Like your idea of push-pull knobs too!
I don't dive bomb.I just find that I can do cool language with the floyd that can't be done as easily with other trems.I also like to pull up which gives a different harmonic response than bending up.I have an all mahogany Jackson Soloist neck thru that sounds very warm and fat with the floyd.I'm more concerned about that locking nut's effect on tone. There's always compromises I guess.I'll consider your suggestion of PRS trem.
I don't have issues with my Lyre as long as I don't use it for more than subtle effects.Sure looks cool though.

Well John works a day job too. He's a machinist I believe.
Plays in a couple of bands too.I don't know how he does it.His work is excellent though.
Wish we could post pics here.

If you decide to go the pot switching method, you might want to consider the push/PUSH pats, as it makes it MUCH quicker than fumbling for knobs, especially the stock knobs, which look SO right, IMHO.
