It is incorrect to believe that isabelline architecture takes its name from Queen Isabella of Spain. It takes its name from Queen Isabel (or Elizabeth) of Portugal (1271-1336). The daughter of King Pedro III of Aragon, she married King Dinis of Portugal and, along with brokering peace between family factions, Isabel had a great interest in architecture. She personally sketched plans for, and supervised the construction of several well known buildings in Portugal, most notably a convent for the Poor Clares (Monastery of Santa Clara a Velha) in Coimbra, hospitals and several churches.
