Ashleet,
Where did you get the idea that cell membrane is a system? I think it is not, then, it cannot be opened or closed system.

The great pioneer in System Theory is Ludwig von Bertalanffy, and he explains that “natural systems include sub-atomic systems, living systems, the solar system, the galactic system and the Universe.”
So, cell membrane could be inside the living systems category, but he says: “Living systems can be cell, organ, organism, group, organization, community, society, and supranational system.” And then, he says: “At each level, a system invariably comprises 20 critical subsystems, which process matter/energy or information except for the first two, which process both matter/energy and information: reproducer & boundary. The processors of matter/energy are: Ingestor, Distributor, Converter, Producer, Storage, Extruder, Motor, Supporter.”

Then, cell membrane could be called a subsystem ( it is a distributor, ingestor, converter, etc.) but, I do not agree with that.

By the way, if cell membrane is a subsystem, it should be a open one, since that an open system usually interacts with some entities in their environment. A closed system is isolated from its environment.

But, if you are interested in cell membrane, maybe the following suggestion from the models of my theory could be at least curious. Think about this question: At life’s origins, how a kind of island surrounded by the ocean’s water could to build a circular wall, thousands of miles away? That’s it: there were some cell’s organelles surrounded by a liquid that came to be the cytoplasm and suddenly... appeared a membrane thousand times bigger than the organelle and far away. This is told by biogenesis theory, it is not?

I think this is an unreal explanation. In The Universal Matrix Theory, everything that appeared inside the first cell system were copies of something existing at our astronomic system. Then, we have as cell’s membrane ancestor, the event horizon surrounding the galaxy nuclei, which makes several functions like our membrane here. At least, this explanation solves the problem of “how appeared the wall and where Nature got the idea from...” Cheers...
