2% of our population are intellectually gifted but only a few are geniuses. Leonardo da Vinci was a genius! There's a prevailing evidence that an individual's environment signficantly affects intellectual development and ultimately determines success. Leonardo was an illegitimate son of a notary and a peasant woman. Did he grow up with his Dad? Imagine if he lived with his poor Mum and was deprived of education?

I'm sure he was not respected during his life as he is now. A lesson to be learned would be not to be so quick to judge. History took hundreds of years recognizing his genius. He may have been thought of like many of his peers, a fool or even a mentally challenged or handicapped individual.

He was respected while alive but more recognised when lifeless. What's relevant for us today is 'how his genius was put into positive uses/practices (i.e. he was a scientist, inventor, artist). This reminds us that giftedness is a societal concern: family (esp parents) and friends, governments, educational establishments (esp educators), media and all those in contact with the genius or gifted person.
