In the arid near-desert conditions where I work, phosphorous has been determined to be the limiting nutrient. Different people use it to different degrees, but everyone is always helped when it rains. Which is the limiting factor, phosphorous or water? If rain is the limiting factor, why bother with phosphorous?

The simple answer is that both are limiting growth factors under different conditions. When water is not limiting growth then phophorous is limiting growth and vice versa. Generally speaking it is easier to ensure sufficient phosphorous than sufficient water. Such that when it does rain growth will no be limited by a lack of phosphorous.
