In order to enlist into the 53rd, where would the enlisting stations be. Would it be common for someone in North Scotland to enlist in this regiment and would he have to travel south in order to do so.

Probably at all major cities, NCOs were sent out regularly to recruit, this regiment about 600-700 total in 1820-1830 had a turn over of 30 - 40 soldiers per quarter. My interest was from a soldier enlisted at Streatham then assembled at Chatham before marching of to Weeden I presume Weeden was one of, or the the 53rd Foot headquarters at that time. The various companies ( approx 100 men ) would move around the country sometimes in groups of companies for training and or other purposes, Their movemnts co-ordinated so they met up at key locations for embarkation when going overseas, typically Chatham ,Portsmouth and Liverpool.

I have been trying to track down a soldier that was enlisted in the 53rd around 1776 and then sent to Boston and Quebec where he was released from service.
John Ross.
How would I be able to find his enlisting records.
Thankyou

What information have got about the muster roll? for the era I looked at ( 1823 - 1840 ),they were full of information, I assume you haven't looked at your relevant records personally. Only a small % of individual attestationand service records have survived , I am told approx 20%.

This John Ross supposedly joined the 53rd regiment of foot in 1775-6 somewhere in the UK, sent to america. Eventually they were sent to Quebec Canada as relief, back to the States again, and then back to Sorel Quebec where he was discharged in 1784 and settled in Quebec, Bonaventure County on a 100 acre parcel of land grant which seemed to be a reward for most remaining soldiers. It would be the 53rd muster roll of foot for that area and time. It may also have been recorded somewhere in the 1815 year.
Its about all i know.
