The answer is pretty simple. Jesus was a Jew, of the tribe of Judah. He was, no doubt, dark skinned and brown eyed, with dark hair. The Christian artists of the period such as Davinci and the like represented Him as a caucasian because most of the Christians were. It must also be remembered that, at this time, there was a strong anti-semitic sentiment throughout Europe. These two factors are probably the reason.
It is interesting to note that paintings of that period were notoriously inaccurate anyway. Davinci's "Last Supper" is probably one of the most recognizable paintings in Christian history. Yet the scene probably looked nothing like his depiction. Christ and his disciples were probably eating and drinking Roman style, lying on their sides propped up on their elbow and eating with the other hand. This is supported in scripture by the writer noting that John was lying in such a fashion that his head was resting against the chest of Jesus.
It is good that most modern Christians do not suffer from the resentment against the Jews as in that day. I have, in fact, recently seen more and more artistic renderings of Jesus that depict Him as he should have looked, like a Jewish carpenter.

I asked this same question when looking at large wall-pictures of Jesus , not renaissance paintings, though ; these were in Salt Lake City !
Nobody replied to me.

Later, we were ushered into a Cinema, where a man with a gravelly voice was used - to clinch the Final Sale ;
"selling" their religion , just like selling Corn Flakes or Beer !
