I remember as a child going to belle vue zoo.As i was walking through the grounds with my parents, an elephant with two wooden benches filled with children strapped to it's back came towards us.I immediately turned to my father and asked if i could join the fun.My father spoke to the mahut,as the seats were full he gave a command upon which the elephant went down on one knee,he promptly lifted me onto it's knee gave another command and the elephant wrapped it's trunk round my waist and sat me on it's head.This would be in the mid fifties.Doubtless H&s would no longer allow this,kids now don't know what their missing.

Hi, only just seen your reminiscences about belle vue.I too remember the elephant carrying children around.1954-55 I used to go dancing there at any of (ithink it was three ballrooms)It was a wonderfull place for youngsters to meet.It had everything-speedway-wrestling-side shows-shooting gallery with real firearm rifles-wall of death-boxing-a different circus type act on every week in the grounds. I remember walking round late evening with a girl i had just met ,there was music echoing (it was "so in love with you am i")and there was a high wire act on.A woman doing a hand stand on top of a 150foot pole, and then sliding down on a wire.Thanks for the memory.GOOD LUCK.
