I recall that on 1 lunar landing, the module for automatic landing didn't work, and the astronaut had to land the lunar lander manually. I think it was Alan Shepherd on Apollo 14, but I can't find any info.

Was it Shepherd and can you provide me with a link to the story.

Alan Shepard was in fact the Commander of Apollo 14.

Yes, Shephard was the commander on Apollo 14. But, we he the one who landed "by stick" or was it another commander?
