Orbital eccentricity

I know that eccentricities of asteroids close to an orbit-orbit resonance with a large planet are changing considerably. But what about asteroids that are not in resonance. Is their eccentricity really constant, or does it change periodically without becoming chaotic?
I wrote a 3body program in 2D (sun, Jup, asteroid), and I have the impression that the eccentricity of an asteroid at a =0.57 a(Jup), may change over about 0.1, although in a nice periodic way.
Is this correct?
