I have some questions about my surname (Rothe) in Germany.

-I see there is a city called Aachen but I found references to Aachen Rothe-Erde. What is the relevance of the name Rothe in that city name?
-There is also a surname Roth. Is one derived from the other or is there no relation?
-I have also found some references to Rothe in Scotland. Is this some extension of the German Rothe?
-Does anyone have any other information of interest related to my surname?
