I have found a reference to 'Wilday of Coventry' in connection with 19C fighter Jemmy Walsh. Can anyone give me any information on him? I am researching family history and it is very likely he was a relative. Sue

Hi Sue

Haven't been on this site for months so I am sorry I have not answered before. I have the possible complete ring record for Jem Willday and some personal details ie., year of birth, height and weight. Also if you type into the Black Sheep Index and follow the the links for Willday, for a price of £10 inc pp. they are saying they have a report/sketch of the Willday/Welsh fight in 1845. I am in the process of publishing two books on the bareknuckle era and my website is bareknuckleprizefighting.com then click on 18th & 19th Century Prize Fighting. There is a comments page which you can also contact me on about interest in the books or boxing queries of that era. Anyway hope this has been of help to you and if you want the ring record and other details please email me back. I promise to answer more quickly this time.

Hi Mick,

Many thanks for taking the trouble to reply. I'm very excited that you have so many details about Jem Willday - I didn't even know his forename! I would be very pleased to recieve the details when you have the time, I have an idea who he is in my family tree and would love to see if the birthdate checks out.

I have looked at your website and would like to purchase one of your books when they come out - I'll keep checking your site to order it. I know nothing about boxing today let alone bareknuckle prizefighting so it is obviously a good time to learn, and the excert from your book seems very accessible. I am interested to find out what sort of men these prizefighters were, how wealthy they became, what sort of lives they led. It must have been a good life to induce men to tolerate such beatings.

Thanks also for telling me about the Black Sheep Index, I will be ordering the report you indicated.

With my thanks and best wishes, Sue
