I have been doing some family research. Apparently, my grandfather from the East End's distant cousin was George Myers (Cornell). I believe from what I have researched that he is a decendent of The Struckmeier family who came to England in the late 1850's from Prussia. My grandfather's grandmother was apparently know as Myers at one time. It seems they dropped The 'Struck' part of the name, and adopted Myers over the years. My own grandfather was 'not a man to be crossed', and was well known to all the local villains in the area, although not on the same scale as George. He also changed his surname as a young man to something else. I have found out that George Cornell married Olive Hudd and they had two children. His daughter Rayner was born in 1965, the year before he was murdered. Also, George's father was Joseph Myers - a fishmonger. I don't know if there is anyone who has more info about the family, as I would like to know more about them.

Thanks

Lisa

Hi Ben,

How did you get on with your project about Charlie and Eddie? Did you contact Charlie himself to find out lots of info? I know he lives in South Africa now. I's not proving too easy to find out about George Cornell,as the family are not keen to give out any info about him. My own grandfather was apparently associated with either the Krays or the Richardson I have found out. He was a bare knuckle fighter in his day, and was quite well known in the South East London area. He was born in 1906, so he was a lot older than Charlie and Eddie.

Hi Lisa, by the date on your post this is gonna be a longshot.....
lineage on my mothers side comes through the Myers/Cornell tree. My grandfather was Joseph cornell, brother of george. His father was also Joseph cornell who had married mary myers.......so theres a family connection here for us both...

Hi Simon,

My e-mail could well be a long shot too, as it's been a while since you posted your message. After further investigation, I could not see a specific connection to the Struckmeier/and Myers surname that the name was changed to. I did have some communication from a Leigh Cornell Tanner a few years ago. She provided me with the names of George b 1928-1966 siblings, Edward, b 1919 Maggie,b 1924 and Marie b 1932, who have all now passed away. There was also a mention of Joseph Cornell born 1890 St George in the East and his wife Polly Garrett/Myers also born in 1890. Joseph's parents were Frederick Cornell born 1858 -1930 St George in the East and Margaret Herring born 1865-1920 Woolwich. Then Frederick's parents were Frederick Cornell born 1836-1911 Lambeth and Sarah Ann Bray born 1832-1910.

Strangely, my grandfather's wife Louisa Avey had a connection to a Herring family. I think her sister married a Herring. I contacted a member of the Herring family to see if they had a connection to Margaret, but was told that they came from a different area of London.

I hope this info may throw some new light on things.

Regards

Lisa

Hi Lisa, I am actually George Cornell's nephew. I fell upon your discussion group after searching for some addition information about my uncle/family tree. My mother's name was Mary Myers Steele; which was George Cornell's sister. 4 of her children are still living in England, and myself, I am living in Canada. I found it very interesting about the history of our family and the name. I have often wondered about why my uncle was Cornell and my mother, Myers. I would really appreciate any information about the family you might have.

Thanks

Hi Barry,

Been a while since I was last on this site, as I have been following other family lines recently. The family surname was Myers, but I believe the Cornell surname was from his mother's side. I have a copy of George and Olive Beryl Hudd's marriage cert from 1955. He was noted as George Myers, father's name Joseph Myers, fishmonger. Of the witnesses on the cert it states a J Cornell and W M Hudd. Can't be sure who J Cornell is though. it's difficult to know exactly why George went by the name of Cornell, but maybe it was because of his lifestyle. Perhaps it was a way of 'ducking and diving' the police, and other criminals etc.
My own grandfather changed his name back in the 1930's, but we think it was because he wanted out of a marriage with my grandmother at the time, also he had some dealings with the Richardson Gang apparently.

Some of George's family have been reluctant to talk about George, as back then his lifestyle probably brought some shame to the family having a gangster as a close relative.
