I have an old manual portable singer typewriter - Model
T-31. I need a new ribbon. does anyone know where I can get one? I can find no reference to this typewriter on any search engine. Do typewriters use standard ribbons/spools so that a current one will work on my machine?

There is a so-called "universal" spool, but it doesn’t suit all known models.

Singer typewriters are a mystery to me - although I'm interested to know more about paris Singer. one of the sons of sewing machine developerinventor Isaac Singer, and whether one was specifically designed for author Sam Clements who liked at times to stand while typing his manuscripts, as did Earnest Hemmingway.

Your machine looks relatively modern. The ribbon should be a doddle to replace.

If not, then persevere.

I've encountered this problem with vintage typewriters. The answer is simple, I go to a typewriter repair service here in Australia. However, if you've already tried this and failed, then the solution is tedious - a bit; but not as tedious as hand grinding a pair of 6” reflector telescope objective glasses from “scratch”. That’s something I’ve also done. Once.

K…. Providing you have the old typewriter ribbon feed spool, just remove the inkless ribbon and rethread the Singer spook with your new ribbon. Two hexagonal pencils have served me well for this. Hexagonal because the shape of the pencil helps control the rotation of the feed and take-up spools, obviating ribbon spilloff.

If your ribbon is wider or narrower than the replacements you're able to buy, you might search for your nearest re-inker. Inquire through the nearest technical college with a publication typography and design undergrad course, or ask a proper commercial job printer who has served indentured apprenticeship and knows the trade.

And if all else fails, you might try contacting:
