I have a late model "Romanian" Vz 24, series YR. I'm wondering if one made so late in the war, presumably when the Third Reich was hurting for resources, may have been made with less than optimum grade steel, or under less than optimally stringent controls. Any info out there on that?

I have never of any problems with Czech made Mausers. Actually they are considered some of the finest Mausers ever made.
The usual differences that you will see are in terms of quality of fit and finish with no effect on safety.
I is usually only the very late war Volksturm rifles that are unsafe and you can tell that just by looking at them.

It is always best to have a qualified gunsmith look at it before shooting it. He will make sure that the headspace is correct and that there isn't excessive wear. Also ask him to check the caliber.
