I am working on a project to properly demostrate that landfill gases (thermal pollution) and particulate matter interfear with astronomical observations. The Observatory that I am a member of, is having their very existance threatened by a proposed landfill which will be less than one mile from its front door. I need to properly demostrate that this landfill will severly impact the ability of our observatory to conduct operations and provide educational services on a day to day basis with the anticipated thermal and airborne particulate matter which will be generated by this proposed landfill. Can you provde me with any examaples of similar astronomical observatories which have been impacted in a similar fashion...???

I think you should be a little more agressive. You should go and tell the people eho own th e landfill to go some where else. Like maybe a place that won't effect someone or someone elses property.

Unfortunately, we can become as agressive as we want and that will not do us much good because the final decision lies with the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation. Our efforts have all been geared to show to the DEC why this landfill should not be placed at this location within our township which will have disasterous consequences for our astronomical observatory. The game plan is to locate as much data as possible to convince the NY State DEC that the placement of this landfill is not in the best interest of the community, the observatory and to the environment as whole. I need as much data as I can muster with regard to the hazardous impact such a facility might have upon the observatory. Particularly, I am searching for observatories which have been similarly affected and/or impacted by a landfill and the airborne particulate matter, and light pollution, which this proposed landfill will present to our community and particularly to the survival of our observatory. So you see, merely being agressive and approaching the propsed developer is not sufficient and not work in this instance. They have "deep pockets" and they care little about the harmful effects that this landfill presents to our community because landfills are a "CASH COW" and the bottom line is first and foremost in the landfill developers' mind.
