I am beginning my study of Biblical Hebrew, and I noticed that many verses of the first chapters of Genesis begin with the conjunctive vav. This I have learned is to be translated "and." Sometimes, however, it is translated "but." My question is: Does Hebrew have the word "but" in it or is this just a function of the translator wanting to make the text flow better?
