I am an American non-Muslim woman. I do not have issue with Islamic faith and I understand that the dress of Muslim woman is a person decision and intended to protect the woman's modesty rather then oppress her.

When I see a woman wearing traditional Muslim clothing, I have no problem with her desire to do so. However, recently I traveled to the Muslim country of Malaysia. During my time there I saw many Muslim woman dressed in varying degrees of traditional dress (sorry, I do not know the names of the loose robes and things).

My question is: It was not unusual to see a woman fully covered in a long and loose black robe with her head and face covered and only her eyes showing, while accompanied by a man who was wearing short pants and a short sleeved shirt. To me, this is very unfair. Why is this acceptable?

It's totally about the men being too jealous to let other men look at their wives.

As a Muslim man, I believe in the example you drew...that is unfair. The man cant be wearing a tank top etc while the woman is wearing a full jilbab. He should respect his own religion and dress modestly, not showing off. However, if he normally dresses like this and she is the conservative one in this regard or vice versa, who knows.

In the gulf as well as Afghanistan it is pretty common to have the women always covered with not just a Hijab but with a Niqab or Burqa. Maybe the woman was keeping to her tradition and the man was a hypocrite?

Who knows without talking to them. :)

In my opinion, women should wear a Hijab and not show off their stuff, however the man should not show off his stuff either. :) This frees up their minds to focus on their marriage and not be showing off to other people. Of course in private, let them wear what they wish. :)

I'm sure this is the case with any man or woman for that matter, why would you marry them if you enjoyed people looking at them. Jealousy is a normal human reaction.
