I am a Chicago based investigative journalist preparing a major feature about wartime activities and functions of the Western Approaches Command Centre in Liverpool. The Centre does exist in its original appearance and was visited (with great difficulty) last fall. The single employee has little information about its actual size, rumored to be about 300 rooms, all within a concrete-encased and gas proof enclosure three floors below grade level.
Information relating to specific departmental purposes (such as U-boat search and destroy operations), coastal aircraft search control, liason with the Admiralty and Churchill Cabinet War Rooms, North American inbound convoy routing and docking, and other specific details will be appreciated.
