Each year, thousands of people die and millions more suffer injuries as a result of car crashes. While many of the accidents were inevitable, many of the deaths and injuries could have been prevented had the vehicle occupants been wearing seat belts. The effectiveness of seatbelts has been studied for decades and have been proven over and over to save lives. Despite the overwhelming evidence that they can dramatically decrease the likelihood of serious accidents and injuries, people still fail to wear their seat blets correctly and consistently.

Prevent Injuries with Seat Belts

Seat belts are only effective at preventing injuries and fatalities during a car accident if they are worn correctly. 3 point Seat Belt can prevent injuries by:

Protecting the head, neck, and spinal cord from impacts within the vehicle. Without a belt, an occupant's head might crash against the dashboard, a window, or another hard surface.

Restraining passengers within the vehicle. By preventing ejection from the vehicle during a crash, occupants are four times less likely to die and fourteen times less likely to face a sever spinal cord injury.

Slowing deceleration. In a car crash, both the vehicle and the people inside are suddenly forced to a halt from high speeds. A seatbelt allows the body to come to a stop more slowly, with less force and jerking.

Redirecting collision forces to the strongest parts of the body. Properly-worn belts cross the shoulders and the hips, protecting the strongest parts of the body against excessive force. A seat belt redistributes forces all over the body rather than allowing a crash to put excessive force on one weaker area.

Even the most advanced vehicles with the newest technology in air bags, brakes, and crash-prevention systems, seat belts are still the most proven and effective ways to prevent injuries and death. However, the type of seatbelt and the way it is worn is often a determining factor in its overall effectiveness. The most effective types of 2 point Seat Belts are lap and shoulder combination belts, rather than belts that simply have a lap strap. Lap straps can keep a person from being thrown from the vehicle, but do not protect the upper body. Lap and shoulder combination straps cross the upper thighs, hips, and upper torso of riders to keep them secured during the crash and to provide extra protection to the head, spinal cord, and upper body.
