The term "Beat" referred not only to the Beat Movement writers themselves, but to a "beatnik" subculture informed by them. The Beat Movement rejected the values of postwar American society; like the Transcendentalists of the previous century they embraced freedom of thought.

The Beat writers experimented heavily with drugs, and their work relied on creativity and spontaneity. Some of the key figures of the Beat Movement, including Allen Ginsberg and Neal Cassady, became directly involved in the Sixties Counterculture movement.
