Feudalism was based on loyalty. Lords granted gifts of land to their vassals, and in return the vassals pledged fealty and military support.

Feudalism provided a system of labor, as serfs were not permitted to leave the lord's land and were required to sacrifice most of what they harvested to the lord's use.
