How can a pressure gradient doffer from a temperature gradient?

The definition of a baroclinic atmosphere says that the contour lines of pressure (isobars) and the contour lines of temperature (isotherms) intersect each other at greater and greater angles in an increasingly baroclinic atmosphere. My question is how can those two different gradients NOT coexist but be in different places at the same time?
