The construction of new infrastructure enabled West Virginians to have more access to the outside world. For instance, the construction of the New River Gorge Bridge, in 1977, made intrastate travel much easier and faster.

Technological advances in communications, for instance TV and radio, allowed West Virginians a glimpse of the larger culture and vice versa.
