Xylophone

Hi, I'm learning to play the xylophone, my teacher showed me that when doing a single mallet roll on one key that I should strike the key in the centre to get a consistent sound-I had been having my mallets one in front of the other so hitting either side of centre with both. My teachers method meant I had to slow down and relearn. My teacher is busy with a new baby so I'm carrying on best I can with books and you tube. I've noticed that all the marimba and xylophone players on you tube stagger their mallets as I was doing...anyone got any opinions on this?
Thanks, olly7070
