Hi, I wonder if anyone has some information on one of my relatives Harry Earnest Woodcock of the 1st Battalion Essex Regiment. He was formerly of the Sherwodd Foresters Regiment where he won the Military Medal. He died on 4 November 1918 and is buried in Caudry Cemetary.

Any info that anyone knows would be gratefully received.

Lance Corporal Harry Ernest Woodcock MM of the 1st Battalion
Essex Regiment died on Monday, 4th November 1918 and is buried at Caudry British Cemetery and no doubt took part in the Allied advance into and past the town of Le Cateau in late 1918. He was killed whilst recovering Captain A.B. Crabtree from the front line and was awarded the Miltary Medal. Born at Loughborough in Leicestershire he moved to Chesterfield in Derbyshire. He originally enlisted in the Notts.and Derby Regiment (Sherwood Foresters) and had a twin sister.

Harry Ernest Woodcock was my uncle and a elder brother of my own father.

In addition to the Miltary Medal he was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal; a collection of which I have recently been able to purchase. I hope that this assists your research?

Thank you for the response.

Our link in the family chain is Henry Woodcock and Sarah Richards, and from them to the Bakers, Fishers and Courts. I think that makes you my cousin twice removed. Happy to send you the family tree information if you let me know an email address.

My son and I visited Harry Woodcocks grave in Caudry last summer. Do you have any further info on the award? I did ask the Essex Regiment museum in Chelmsford as we live there, but they said all the records were destroyed in the London Blitz in WW2, but were interested in Harry's award and why it was awarded.

I have a photograph of Harry Ernest Woodcock in Military uniform which I shall be happy to copy to you. My e-mail address is barry@offsidewhistle.co.uk. Home telephone number (01246) 271559. I do not know whether my previous message re-death of Harry got to you okay?
