Stage (theatre)

Hi, I have a question for anybody in the know about stage design. My GF has recently started designing stage for small theatre productions. Part of this is to take stage measurements and then make a scaled down model. She always has trouble using a tape measure for this as she's usually alone at this stage.

So as part of her birthday I was going to buy a laser measurer which is a lot easier to use if you're alone. Only problem is I know that these things are more estimations and don't give the mm precise measurement of the tape. Would this still be ok or does the measurement have to be very precise for the scaled down version??

If it is indeed ok to not be inch perfect, can anybody recommend a reliable but not so expensive model? A lot of them seem to be over £100 but I suspect these are maybe more for building sites/daily use which she wouldn't need this for. Thanks for any help
