Hello,

does anyone know anything about the legend concerning 3 crowns of East Anglia? I read something of it years and years ago, but can't recall much of it. We visited Dunwich on Sunday but found no reference to any legends. I think it's something like one of them being under the sea, one somewhere else etc.

Many thanks for any advice.

Hi

I'm afraid there never has been such a legend. The tale was invented by M. R. James for his ghost story 'A Warning to the Curious',which was published in 1925. In this, he alleged that 3 hidden crowns guard East Anglia from invasion, the one in the story being unearthed at 'Seaburgh', which is actually Aldeburgh in Suffolk.

No trace has ever been found of a genuine legend dating from before this story, and in fact James even gives a nod & a wink in his writings that he invented it. Sorry. But read the story anyway, it's one of the best ghost stories ever written!
