Hello,
I am doing some historical research on an area near my home on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The area is known today as “Schooner Pond”, during the middle 1700’s it was called”Manner’s Cove”. On a 1714 French map it was called, “Barache de Laury”.
I have been trying to get a translation for Barache without any success. The pond in question is behind a graveled sandbar at the ocean. The local Acadians had a word for this, Barrachois or sometimes spelt Barachois. This is similar to the word Barache but historians at the Fortress Louisbourg which is located about 20 miles away say there is no link. Have you ever seen this word or have any idea as to its meaning?

Thank You.
