Gentlemen:
It is frequently said that during the Cuban-Spanish war, beginning in 1895, Argentina sold Mauser rifles, produced under license in Argentina, to the Spanish government. Is this a fact? If this was true, was it the Mauser 91? Thank you in advance for your help.

Dr. Sarracino

It is partly true and partly false.

Argentina never produced any Mauser rifles until the 1909 Carbines were made by FMAP in the 1940's and 50's.

Spain did buy Model 1891 Mauser rifles and carbines in 1893 to suppress the insurrection in Melilla.

The Ludwig Loewe Company in Berlin was in the process of making 1891 Mauser rifles and carbines for Argentina (1892 - 1896). Spain asked Argentina to allow them to buy some of the rifles and carbines from Loewe because Spain was in dire need of the weapons and could not wait until Loewe was finished with Argentina's order.
Argentina granted permission and 5000 rifles with Argentine markings were removed from Loewe's warehouse and sold to Spain.
Loewe then diverted production of 5000 carbines being made for Argentina and marked them with the Royal Spanish crest and BERLIN 1894 on the receiver, these too were sent to Spanish forces in Melilla.

After the uprising in Melilla many of the M1891 rifles and carbines were sent to Spain's colonies in Cuba and the Philippines, where they were used with great effect against the American forces during the Spanish-American War.
