Waterwheel installations became common in the US in the last years of the 19th century. The first such installation was completed in Appleton, Wisconsin, in 1882.

Claverack Creek, in Stottville, New York, is actually the oldest hydroelectric plant in the US. The Morgan Smith turbine was installed there in 1871.
