Does anyone know why the statues along the roof on the garden side of the palace, are not only different styles but appear to be melting of disintigrating?

Maybe the statues on that side of the building are older, or more exposed to the elements.

There are 20 statues lining the roof, from left to right the first five have smooth space where faces should be (these seem to be the sciences), the next 8 seem perfect (at least 4 are gods), then the final 8 seem as though acid was thrown on them. It seems intentional and not like weather or war damage.
