Copper(I) oxide

Does anyone know how to form a nice, clean layer of cuprous oxide on a piece of sheet copper metal, other than heating it up and then flaking or sanding off the black cupric oxide layer? It should be possible to use "anodic oxidation", but what sort of electrolyte, current, etc? This is for experiments with copper-oxide rectifiers, so any additional info in this area would be appreciated. Thanks!
