Do female California newts eye color change when laying eggs?

Observed today females laying eggs with white eyes rather than the dark eyes I usually see. Nictitating membrane?

How long does it take a female to lay an egg sac?

I watched one begin today and 40 minutes later the egg sac was partially out of her.

I REALLY want to know the answers to my questions.
