Dark Romanticism draws more heavily from the Romanticist movement that preceded it, but exists as a pessimistic counterbalance to the Transcendentalists.

While Transcendentalists preoccupied themselves with man's potential, and his innate capacity for free thought and moral virtue, Dark Romanticists such as Poe, Hawthorne and Melville clearly placed more emphasis on man's sinful nature.

Dark Romanticism places a lot of emphasis on evil, and the evil aspects of the world, anthropomorphizing demons, ghosts, and Satan; there's a clear fascination with themes of madness, weakness, and failure.
