I studied with Mr. abram from 1958-1960 when he was artist in residence at (then) Oklahoma College for Women ib Chickasha, Oklahoma.
Jacques Abram first studied piano with Miss Ima Hogg, then Miss Ruth Burr in Houston, Texas. Ernest Hutcheson played a recital in Houston, and little Jacques (7 years old) went to the piano after the concert, and while guests were meeting Mr. Hutcheson backstage, began to perform his own recital. This alerted Hutcheson to the genius of the little boy and he encouraged his parents to send Abram East for advanced studies.
This was delayed for a time, during which he became a protege of the the Leschetizky pupil and concert pianist Arthur Shattuck. He then studied at the Curtis Institute with Josef Hofman and David Saperton. After thaat he entered the graduate school of the Juilliard and studied with Ernest Hutcheson.
He won the National Federation of Music CLub Young Artist Award and the Schubert Memorial Prize, and as part of the Award was granted the privilege of appearing as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy conducting in the MacDowell Second Piano Concerto in D minor in Carnegie Hall, New York City. In 1040 he appeared as soloist with the New York Philharmonic in the Brahms Bb major Piano COncerto and received 5 rave reviews in the NYC
papers.
Jacques Abram was an amazing sight-reader, as well as memorizer.
Mr Abram also taught at the Juilliard School untill entering WW II. His career was interrupted until 1946 when he made his first appearance, which was great success.
