At school I was told that the name Leiden etymologically came from Lugdunum, which did make sense, but as Leiden was called Lugdunum only since the renaissance (wrongly), this etymomlogy does not hold, My question is thus: if Leiden not < Lugdunum,
where does the name Leiden come from? Since when has Leiden been called Leiden; presumably it was called Leiden before it was equated with Lugdunum.
