Hindemuth notwithstanding, people can in fact discern two keys simultaneously. An interesting, and probably earliest example, is found in a Fantasia imitating the harp playing of Ludovico written mid 16th century by Alonso Mudarra. I believe it is also referred to as Fantasia #10. The last section has the bass line in b minor while the treble and more active line is in b major.
