A few years ago a squirrel came out of a large spruce tree we used to have in our yard to a bird feeder we had placed in another tree. It was summer. It was a little redder in color than a chipmunk, but he was so sleek that my first thought was "Wow! That's the biggest chipmunk I have ever seen!" Then I noticed he didn't have the stripes down his sides or around his eyes, and it had a long tale. I never saw it again and I have never seen a squirrel with such a smooth coat and that deep red color. Was it an American Red Squirrel?
