I was part of the marine attachment aboard the Europa, when she was used as a troopship in 1946,it is my memory that we made 4 possible 5 trips from South Hampton to New York, bringing back men from the Airforce, we docked at the same pier that the Queen Mary used because we were the largest ship that flew an American flag, as I remember 55,000 tons. we took that ship back to Brennhaven, Germany, in 1946, we were in Brennhaven for 6 weeks while the paperwork was being completed, after it was turned over, we sailed back to New York on a Liberty ship that took 7 or 8 days. where this story of giving it back to the French came from,I"d like to know??? It took 4 and ahalf days to cross, the ship was 13 stories high and one trip we hit a storm that send waves crashing almost to the bridge. all the state/rooms on the upper deck had been closed off, that was the job of the 100 marines on board, guard/duty, there were in the niegborhood of a 1000 salors on board. It would be great to hear from any marines or salors that made those crossings.
